Sleep and Rest
One of the more overlooked aspects of health. A lack of rest and sleep can cause depression, agitation, and immune system breakdown. There are many causes of sleep deprivation. Stress is probably the biggest culprit. Stress raises our cortisol levels, and after a while, they don't return to normal levels throwing our systems out of balance. Stress can also cause us to perseverate on thoughts about what needs to be done in our life. Meditation can help with slowing our thoughts down so we can rest. Another cause of loss of sleep is a lack of calcium. Taking a calcium supplement before bed can relax you and prepare you for sleep. Another thing that can interfere with sleep is parasites. Parasites are active at night, and cause our organs to work harder, causing wakefulness. Caffeine, of course, can be a major sleep deterrent. Many people feel no effects from caffeine, but if you have any sensitivities to caffeine, you will experience many sleep difficulties. Personally, if I drink caffeine, I have no problem falling asleep, but I can almost guarantee that I will wake up in the middle of the night, and be wide awake for a couple of hours. If you wake up consistently between 1 and 3 in the morning, you may have issues with your liver. Around two o'clock could mean issues with your adrenals. Between 3 and 5 in the morning may mean issues with the lungs.
Rest...
We need to allow our bodies time to rest. A good rule of thumb is to rest from Friday evening until Saturday evening. Give your body a chance to rejuvenate. Athletes need to give the body time to rest between workouts.
